The original museum of The Durham Light Infantry was opened
just after the First World War at Fenham Barracks in Newcastle upon
Tyne. In 1939 the regimental depot was moved to Brancepeth Castle, near
Durham City, where the museum remained until the depot closed in 1962.
The museum collection was stored at the regimental headquarters in Elvet
Waterside, Durham City, until a new museum, built at Aykley Heads in
Durham City, was opened in 1969.
