Catalogue Description

Introduction

There was a chemist's business on or near the site of the present shop in the middle of the eighteenth century when Robert Forster was an upholster, draper, chemist, druggist, grocer and saddler. On his death the business was divided between his surviving sons and Joseph Forster succeeded to the chemist's part of the business, but there is no information as to whether he continued it. The shop became a private residence in which a relative of the Forster family, Thomas Clark, lived. After Clark's death in 1829 Thomas Teasdale opened a chemist's shop, and it seemed to have remained a chemists shop under various parties until John Edward Hodgson took it over in about 1906 and his son, Bernard Hodgson, continued the family business in High Row. Hodgson's records also contain the archives of James Robinson, who was a chemist in North Gate. This firm was established in 1867 and is described in Pikes' A descriptive account of Darlington, 1894. The shop closed down in about 1909.
