Catalogue Description
Clayton family of Chesters, NorthumberlandRepresented here are the Durham estate papers of the Clayton family (the founders of the business which became Clayton and Gibson but whose connection with it ceased in the later 19th century). The family acquired the house at Chesters in the mid-1790s. The pattern for the next century is of the learned professions (the church and the law) gradually giving way to the martial ones or landed inactivity; of a drift to the south (Nathaniel George Clayton in Surrey, William Clayton (Walters) in Dorset) and, with changing times, an ever greater gap between this county family and the town government of Newcastle in which they had played such an important role in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
The estate papers for Northumberland are at the Northumberland Record Office. See also material deposited at the Archives and Special Collections Section of the Durham University Library (PD/CG/Bute/Bundle A).
