Catalogue Description
Harrison, Stanton and Bell of Stubb House, WinstonIn 1670 Isabel Holmes was a freeholder in Stubhouse. Soon afterwards the whole property was vested in the Holmes family. Thence it descended to the Harrisons (see pedigree)
Cornelius Harrison (d. 1806) married Anne, daughter and heir of Philip Brunskill. The Brunskills had lived at Barnard Castle since the mid-sixteenth century. In 1594 Philip Brunskill purchased the rectory and tithes of Bowes. These Brunskill properties descended to the Harrisons.
On the death, in 1842, of Thomas Harrison without surviving issue the combined properties passed to the Stantons who were in practice as solicitors in Newcastle, Southampton etc. In the 1920s the Stubb House estate was sold by them to the Bells formerly of North End, Durham City.
The Reverend Cornelius Harrison was one of the nearest maternal relatives of Dr. Samuel Johnson. The cleric's son, Cornelius, cut off his own son, Marley, with the proverbial shilling.
Further material on the Harrisons may be found in the Hanby Holmes Collection (D/HH) and in D/X 234 and D/X 662.
