I have no doubt that you in your capacity as one of the Trustees believe the same to be a correct claim or you would not have been a party to forwarding me such very extortionate and unjust claims, in the face of such accounts I see it will be utterly useless my going into the questions of extras and omissions with any probability of arriving at a just and speedy settlement, before therefore any question is opened as to what is due to the Contractors, the Contractors had better through you send me half a dozen names of surveyors (not architects) of well known reputation not local ones, to whom the matter may be referred, in accordance with Clause 6 of the General Conditions of Contract, and I will then select a name to whom we can mutually refer out differences'.

Letter from Durham County Council Education Department to Rev D. R. Evans, Vicar of Coxhoe - 23 July 1928 - 'Referring to your letter of the 5th ultimo, it is impossible for the Education Committee to say anything about the points referred to therein until they have before them the definite proposals of the Managers. The last paragraph of your letter seems to imply that the Managers are willing that the school shall continue to be used for educational purposes as it stands on the understanding that they will not find money for any structural alterations, but would only confine themselves to making good any defects in the present building. The expression ¿to make good any defects in the present building¿ is so vague that the Education Committee would be glad to have some further definite information upon the point. ¿Making good defects¿ might be held to imply - and I think would be held by the Board of Education to imply - making good the defects which militate against the proper use of the premises for teaching purposes, and would therefore include dealing with most (if not all) of the defects set out in the Board's schedule, which has already been sent to you'

Letter from County Council of Durham, Education Department to Rev D. R. Evans, Vicar of Coxhoe - 12 April 1929 - '¿It seems to me most desirable that there should be no misunderstanding upon any point which is likely to arise in regard to the future of this school, and consequently I suggest for the consideration of yourself and your fellow Managers that you should give me an opportunity of attending a Managers' meeting for the purpose of setting out quite clearly the position in so far as the County Education Authority is concerned and of hearing, and endeavouring to answer, any points which any of the Managers feel disposed to raise¿'

Letter from Board of Education to Local Education Authority - 16 July 1929 - '¿I am directed to state that, on the understanding that this School is now to be used for juniors only, the Bard would be prepared to approve the Managers' proposals, as shown on the plan returned herewith, and to regard them as meeting their requirements in regard to the premises, if steps were also taken to improve the ventilation of the rooms. The Board would also suggest that communication between rooms would be improved if a corridor and way through were formed as suggested on the rough plan enclosed. It would be a further improvement if a covered way about 8'0¿ high could be provided between A and B. The proposed partitions to the Boys' Cloakrooms need not be more than 7'6¿ to 8'0¿ high. The two Cloakrooms would provide sufficient accommodation for the Boys, but lavatory basins should be provided for the Boys. On completion of the alterations the School would be recognised by the Board as providing 290 places (4 x 50 + 48 + 42)'.
