Catalogue Description

The united parish of Darlington, St Matthew and St Luke has its origins in the report of Darlington Deanery Commission in May 1976. The Commission was set up to monitor the work of the Anglican churches in Darlington. The church of St. Luke was still not completely built and the church congregation was small. The church of St. Matthew, on the other hand, was fully built and had a stable congregation. It was decided to rationalise buildings and manpower and unite both churches and parishes into a single parish with the closure of first St. Luke's vicarage and then the church in September 1978. The two parishes were officially joined in 1979. The Pentecostal Assemblies of God first bought the church and vicarage of St. Luke in 1980 and then in 1983 bought the church hall and church cottage as well.

Please see Darlington, St. Matthew [EP/Da.SM] and Darlington, St. Luke [EP/Da.SL] for earlier records when these two churches were separate parishes.
