My chief object was to secure that property for the Parish as in consequence of its joining the Churchyard there might very likely have been some disagreeable claim on the Churchyard & encroachments. I also wished to secure it for a site for a Parish room, if one could ever be built. Nothing was settled about the application of the rents. It was my wish to let them accumulate for a building fund & as it was necessary to put some name to the fund, when I put the money into the Savings Bank, I gave it that name: but I considered that the money might be applied properly to any necessary Parochial purpose. When I left Durham there seemed to be no other way of settling the debt on the railings fund than by apportioning this money to it, which with the approval of the Churchwardens I did. I will tell you more about it the first time that I am in Durham'.

I think you should not ask me to repair the blisters in the plastering; at the time you went over the work you certainly mentioned the blisters, but never alluded that I would be asked to repair them & when you wrote me you said you had sent certificate on to Mr Wadsworth, & the question of my putting them right was mentioned afterwards Mr Wadsworth, by causing the distempering to be done whilst the plastering was full of dampness was the cause of the damage & I cannot get the plasterer who did the work to contribute anything towards repairing, however if you send me in the course of a post or two the balance of my a/c you may deduct 2 5s/-d & the painter who is employed (R. Clark) by Mr Wadsworth to do the internal painting & cleansing to the Institute can repair the blisters as he proceeds with his work. Of course I make this offer without prejudice & in order to have the matter squared up'.

Draft letter to Durham University Estates commissioner 19 November 1907 - 'I beg to be allowed to make an application for assistance towards enlargement of St Oswald's Church Institute, Durham'. 'Four years ago we built on Ch. Inst: wh: has been & is an inestimable boon to the Parish. The Inst. cost £1750 irrespective of the site wh: was ours, & the entire cost has been paid off. Since the Inst: was opened (in May 1903) the Education Act of 1902 came into operation in this Borough, & made certain provisions of that Act the L. E. A. was entitled to demand payment for the use of our N. Schools when used for Parochial purposes, such as evening classes, Sunday school & other meetings &c. This demand of the Authority was a very heavy burden to the Parish, wh: is very poor & in order to avoid such heavy charges - from £20 to £30 p. an - as were likely to be made by the L. E. A. we at once transferred all Parochial meetings, classes, Sunday school &c to the Ch. Inst. We were most thankful & pleased that we had such a building as the Ch: Inst available for the purpose. We now find ourselves somewhat hindered & crippled in our Parochial work for want of additional rooms particularly for Sun: school classes &c. We purposes [therefore] enlarging the Ch: Inst: by erecting more rooms & providing accommodation for a Caretaker. The Architect calculates that the additional buildings, plans of which have been prepared, will cost £300. We have had £100 towards this account, & we have too sufficient ground contiguous to the present building whereon the rooms may be erected. I beg, therefore, to solicit your assistance towards enabling us to proceed with this very necessary work & to express an earnest hope that you will kindly help us in the matter'.
