Charities (Ref: EP/Lam 12/)

The John Smith and Sir Leonard Greenwell charities

John Smith Charity
Under the settlement of his estates, dated 15 March 1733, John Smith reserved the right of charging his estates with the payment of £520. In his will, of 25 March 1734, he left £500 to his daughter and £20 to the chapelry of Lamesley. The interest thereon was to be distributed to the poor at Christmas at the discretion of the churchwardens and incumbent.

According to the report of the Charity Commissioners of 1900 the charity consisted of the yearly sum of 20 shillings paid by Lord Ravensworth, owner of the estates formerly in the possession of John Smith. This sum was divided equally among eight persons not in receipt of parish relief.

Sir Leonard Greenwell Charity
Major-General Sir Leonard Greenwell left, in his will of 21 December 1840 (proved 9 January 1845), the residue of his estate to the incumbent and churchwardens of Lamesley to distribute bread and warm clothing to the poor during the winter. In 1846 the bequest stood and £1252 4s. 6d. in Consols. In 1866 he Charity Commission ordered that a third of the income from the charity should be transferred to the new parish of Eighton Banks.

In 1894 Lord Ravensworth transferred £20 for the John Smith Charity to the Charity Commissioners. By the time of the report of 1900 the John Smith Charity was administered with the Sir Leonard Greenwell Charity. After 1894 the trustees of the charity were the incumbent, the churchwardens and three representatives of the parish council. The charities continued to be administered together until it was decided by the trustees, under the terms of the Charities Act 1992, to distribute the capital as income and wind up the charities. The charities were thus wound up in 1995.
