Catalogue Description
James Finlay Weir Johnston was born in 1796, came to Durham in 1825, and was appointed Reader of Chemistry and Mineralogy at Durham University in 1833. He died in 1855, but the Trustees of his estate were responsible for building the Johnston Technical School on South Street, Durham (later the site of the City Library). It opened in 1901, for boys and girls and in the first year 54 pupils were admitted. The numbers increased to such an extent that in 1913 it was found necessary to establish a separate school for girls on the Sands, under the name of the Durham Girls County School.
In 1943 it changed its name to Durham Girls Grammar School.
In September 1969 the school changed its name again to Durham Wearside Secondary School.
Durham Wearside and Gilesgate Secondary Schools merged in September 1977 to form Durham Gilesgate Comprehensive School, operating across a split site.
In September 1984 the 'School on the Sands' was opened as Durham Sixth Form Centre.
See Durham Sixth Form Centre for a history of the school.
