Catalogue Description

Salters Lane School, Darlington

Salters Lane School opened on 25 May 1910 as the Open Air School, Darlington, on a site behind the Technical College. Twenty girls were admitted and it closed in the winter. Pupils were malnourished, had ear, nose and throat disorders, lupus, vomiting and tuberculosis. In January 1911, it moved to a field adjoining Dodmire School, with 10 boys and 10 girls, aged 8-14. However, it soon reverted to educating only girls. A new Dodmire School opened on 6 October 1924, with 41 girls, aged 7-14, all sent to the school by the other elementary schools in Darlington. On 18 July 1929, the school transferred to Salters Lane Open Air Council School, a new site opposite Glebe School, Darlington. Salters Lane School was mixed and had its official opening on 16 October 1929. In September 1992, it amalgamated with Glebe and Mayfair Schools to form Beaumont Hill School, Darlington.
