Edna Hunter was elected to the Tanfield seat in Derwentside in 1997. She served as Treasurer of the North Durham Labour Party Parliamentary Constituency and as Treasurer of the ruling Labour Group on the County Council. In 2007, she became the first female Chair of the County Council.
