Registers of Identification numbers (motor vehicle registration numbers)

Early records contain only a date, number, name and address of owner and agent's name but from 1939 the information given generally includes: date, name of owner, address (town/village only), make of vehicle, type, colour, weight, horsepower, type of vehicle (private, trade or public conveyance), date of issue; later volumes record only the date, agency supplying vehicle, make, engine capacity and some further notes.

Registration was established by the Motor Car Acts of 1902 and 1920 which laid down that each county and county borough should keep a register. Each council was assigned index marks or letters. The County Borough of Darlington became a licensing authority in 1915 and continued until 1974.
