Durham County Council Building Design (Ref: DC/ARCH)Architects' Plans: Interim List (Ref: DC/ARCH 1/1-848)

The following plans were selected from the records of Durham County Council Corporate Services Building Design section following a programme of digitisation of the original records.

The plans all relate to Durham County Council premises or, in a few cases, buildings taken over by the Council after 1889. They range in date from 1859 to 2007, and are additional to the series of plans CC/Arch.

The collection contains plans of County Hall, schools of all types, including special and residential schools, colleges of further education, libraries and museums, police stations and magistrates' courts, fire and ambulance stations, community centres, day centres, aged people's homes, advance factory units and gypsy sites.

Not all plans have been retained. The site, layout and drainage plans, sections and elevations were selected for preservation. Plans of foundations, steelwork, roof layout (excepting historic buildings), ceilings, partitions, floor finishes, and window, door and other detail drawings have not been kept.

Many of the schools built in County Durham in the 1960s used the construction method known as CLASP (Consortium of Local Authority Special Projects) developed by Nottingham, Gateshead, Durham and other local authorities. A full set of CLASP layout drawings has been retained for Chilton Secondary Modern School, Ref No DC/ARCH 1/289, as an example.
