Catalogue Description

Chester-le-Street Methodist Circuit
This circuit includes the two formerly separate Chester-le-Street circuits, Primitive Methodist and Wesleyan Methodist, which were amalgamated in 1934.

Chester-le-Street Primitive Methodist Circuit included chapels at: Birtley, Station Road; Chester-le-Street, Central Church, Bridge End and Durham Road; Chester Moor; Fatfield; Harraton (property sold to Plymouth Brethren, 1934); Kimblesworth; Ouston (Pelaw Main Colliery); Pelton; Pelton Fell, The Howlett; Portobello; Waldridge. Services were also held at Elizabethville between about 1923 and 1929. The circuit was formerly part of Sunderland Circuit.

Chester-le-Street Wesleyan Methodist Circuit included: Beamish; Birtley; Brecon Hill; Chatershaugh; Chester-le-Street, Station Road; Chester Moor; Edmondsley; Harraton; Kimblesworth (Tanhills); Pelton Fell; West Pelton; Perkinsville; Twizell. It was, until 1873, part of the Durham Circuit and for a few years after 1873 also included West Rainton.

Since some places had both Primitive and Wesleyan Methodist churches, in the years following the amalgamation of the circuits in 1934, some congregations were united and some redundant churches and manses sold.
