Catalogue Description
Consett Methodist Circuit became part of the North West Durham Methodist Circuit c. 2013Catalogue Contents
(formerly Primitive Methodist)
Ref: M/Co 169Formerly Shotley Bridge Wesleyan Methodist Church (until 1932)
Trinity Methodist Church was built in 1855 at the west end of The Terrace. In 1905 a large Sunday School building was built alongside it (which became the Village Hall). In 1950 it was agreed to close Trinity Church and retain the Front Street premises as the sole Methodist Church in the village. Trinity Methodist Church was pulled down in the mid 1950s.
The Primitive Methodists broke away from the Wesleyans in 1812. A small chapel was built in Cutler's Hall Road in 1822, followed in 1852 by a larger one at the corner of Wood Street and Green Street.
Land for the new Primitive Methodist Church on Front Street was obtained in 1866 and the foundation stones of the church and Sunday School were laid on Saturday 25 August 1894. The church was completed in 1895 and replaced the Old Chapel built in 1822, which was sold and converted into two dwellings. It was demolished in 1957.
After 1950 Front Street was the sole Methodist Church in the village. The sale of the old Trinity Sunday School building facilitated many improvements to the church.
The last service was held on 27 April 2014, when the church merged with Blackhill Methodist Church to form Blackhill and Shotley Bridge Uniting Church
