Coxhoe St. Joseph Roman Catholic Parish (Ref: RC/Cox)

The parish which is now known as Coxhoe, SS. Joseph, Patrick and Cuthbert has a fairly convoluted history. The parish began life in 1839 as Sedgefield, St. Joseph. The church in Sedgefield closed in 1871. The priest was relocated to a new church at Cornforth in 1875 and the parish was renamed Cornforth, SS. Joseph, Patrick and Cuthbert. Meanwhile, the parish of Trimdon, St. William was formed in 1864 (Trimdon had previously come under the area of the parish of Sedgefield, St. Joseph). From c.1875 until c.1902 the parish of Trimdon, St. William was served from Cornforth, SS. Joseph, Patrick And Cuthbert. For most of this period there are joint registers for the two parishes. It should however be noted that during the period July 1881 - September 1882 the parish of Trimdon, St. William temporarily separated from the parish of Cornforth, SS. Joseph, Patrick and Cuthbert. Separate baptism, marriage and burial registers were kept by Trimdon, St. William during this period. Trimdon, St. William, became an entirely separate parish in 1902.

The parish of Cornforth, SS. Joseph, Patrick and Cuthbert became known as West Cornforth, SS. Joseph, Patrick and Cuthbert in 1904. In 1966 the parish church relocated to Coxhoe and the parish was renamed Coxhoe, SS. Joseph, Patrick and Cuthbert.
