Catalogue Description

Records of St. George's Presbyterian Church and
Union Street Congregational Church,
deposited February 1985
(Acc: 112(D))(Ref: C/Da; P/Da)

County Record Office,
County Hall,
DURHAM.
DH1 5UL

In the late seventeenth and eighteenth century non-conformists of the congregational and presbyterian persuasion met together in rooms in Darlington. In 1806 the Congregationalists, who were a majority, seceded and met in rooms till 1812 when Bethel Chapel, Union Street, was opened. New premises built on the old site were opened in 1862 and remained in use until the congregation moved to Northgate United Reformed Church. Presbyterian meetings seem to have ceased till 1863 when services were held in the Mechanics Hall under the direction of Newcastle Presbytery and a separate preaching station was established in 1865. In 1869 St. George's Church, Northgate, opened, and when the Congregational Church united with them in 1975 it became Northgate United Reformed Church.
