(In the period 1962 - 1964 St. William's R.C. School underwent a major building programme which involved the purchase of the Methodist chapel adjoining the school for conversion into a school hall and kitchens, and also the construction of new classrooms on the existing school site. During this period it appears that the infant school children attended St. Thomas Aquinas Infant School, Darlington. The minutes of St. William's School Managers' meeting held 21 November 1964 [RC/Da.SW 9/11] record the decision to retain children at St. Thomas Aquinas Infant School until they reached the age of 8 years, with effect from September 1965.)
