The circuit was formed in September 1972 from the amalgamation of Brandon and Deerness Valley and Durham Methodist Circuits.

Bowburn Methodist Church
In 1964 Bowburn Methodist Church was formed from the two existing societies of Bowburn Central and Bowburn Durham Road, using the former's premises for worship and the latter's for Sunday school work. In 1969 the church at Durham Road was sold with Sunday school activities continuing in the adjoining schoolroom and premises.
