Catalogue Description

The Shildon Works Co. operated at Soho Works, Shildon, which was established by Timothy Hackworth. Hackworth was appointed to superintend the locomotives of the Stockton & Darlington Railway in 1825 and from 1840 he operated the works as an independent business. The Shildon Works Co. was a subsidiary of the Stockton & Darlington company and took over the works in 1849.

As a result of the complexity of the relationship between the Shildon Works Company and the Stockton & Darlington Railway, it was decided that no attempt would be made to identify and separate the documents relating to the two companies.

The records have been grouped as follows
