Catalogue Description
The South West Durham District Health Authority was the NHS organisation covering Sedgefield and Wear Valley Districts 1974-1992Catalogue Contents
Hollywood Hall (or Holywood Hall) was built by Charles Atwood in 1864. It was subsequently occupied by the Misses Rogerson and by Mr. Vickers from whom it was purchased by the County Council in 1912. It was opened for 25 patients in 1914. It remained a County Council establishment until 1948.
Opened in 1914 as a tuberculosis sanatorium. Treated men only until 1919. Surgery for pulmonary tuberculosis ceased in 1963. Surgery unit closed in 1977. Psychiatric patients received from 1977.

The Durham County Consumption Sanatorium at Horn Hall, Stanhope, was established in 1899 and by 1925 was used for men only.

Ref: H/SWD 481Prior to July 1948 the County Maternity Home provided obstetric services for patients whose ante-natal care had been monitored by local authority clinics and whose confinement was judged to be better conducted in the maternity unit than at home. After July 1948 the Home became part of the obstetric unit at Bishop Auckland General Hospital. The Home closed in 1972 and patients transferred to a new obstetric unit in Bishop Auckland General Hospital.
