The court minute books listed below were originally selected for permanent preservation in the Public Record Office, London, under section 3(4) of the Public Records Act 1958.
These records were subsequently transferred from the Public Record Office to the Durham County Record office following the decision of the Lord Chancellor that County Court records selected for permanent preservation are appropriate for deposit in local record offices appointed as places of deposit under S. 4(1) of the 1958 Act.
Original selection of the court minute books was based on the requirement to preserve all records earlier than 1850 in date, the earliest post-1850 minute book and one book for every tenth year thereafter.
