Catalogue Description

Thomas W. Bell was the younger son of John Bell who was involved in a variety of businesses including surveying, stationery and bookselling. From 1805 John Bell the elder began trading as John Bell and Sons and he died in 1816. Both Thomas and his elder brother, John Bell the younger, were also trained as surveyors and booksellers. John Bell the younger went into his own bookselling business and it was Thomas who took over his father's business in 1816 while working as a surveyor. Thomas maintained the bookselling and stationery business until his own sons, William John Bell and John Grey Bell, took over this side of the family business. Around 1844 Thomas changed the name of the business to Thomas Bell and Sons. Thomas died in 1860 and one of his younger sons, Christopher Seymour Bell took over his father's business. The records in this collection primarily relate to Thomas and Christopher Seymour Bell. Thomas was appointed a commissioner to oversee the enclosure of Boldon common and fell and the records concerning Thomas primarily relate to this appointment. For Christopher, there are number of letters which were written to Christopher in his capacity as a surveyor.
