Ref: D/X 276/1

Ship's Passport (Izn-i Sefine) issued to Captain Connolly (? perhaps Conway?), the captain of an English merchant ship to ply in certain Turkish waters, including the Bosphorus, in accordance with the Sultan's Capitulation, on payment of the 'Security Duty'. Dated 23 Rajab 1284 of the Muslim era (21 November, 1867). The style of writing is the court hand called divani. At the head is the Imperial Cypher (tughra) of the reigning Sultan Abdul-Aziz son of Mahmud II
