12 August 1778 (1) John Burdon of Hardwick, Esquire (2) Sir James Riddell of Coxhoe, bart. Agreement and release (1) J.R. and J.B. mutually discharge each other from any actions which they might have taken against each other except in respect of the sums of £4500 and £6500 (2) J.R. agrees that, within one month, he will pay the costs of the ejectment if not paid by Joseph Reay and William Gibson (trustees named in the will of John Swinburn) (3) J.R. agrees that J.B. may, at any time, remove the engine etc., used in working Quarrington Colliery (4) J.B. agrees not to proceed further on the ejectments brought against J.R. and his tenants (5) J.B. agrees that he will give six months notice to J.R., Reay and Gibson if he wishes either of the principal sums to be paid Recites (1) that J.B. is owed sums of £4500 and £6500 with interest from 22 May 1778 on security of the Coxhoe estate and leasehold land at Cornforth previously belonging to John Swinburn (2) that J.B. has commenced ejectments against J.R. and his tenants at Coxhoe and Cornforth (3) that J.B. has 'for many years worked Quarrington Colliery adjoining the Coxhoe estate and has erected and used a 'Fire Engine', engine house, engine man's house, smith's shop etc. standing on the Coxhoe estate when John Swinburn purchased the estate from him, and that some of the coals were led for a short distance over the estate (4) that J.R. has made a claim upon J.B. for the use of the 'fire engine' etc., leading and consequential damage, which has been rejected by J.B.
