Catalogue Description

Deeds relating principally to property in Boldron, in the parish of Startforth, Yorkshire,

and also in Barnard Castle, with family papers of the Benson family

deposited on long term loan

June 1976

(Acc: 916B(D))
Mrs. Vizard states that her great-grandmother, a Miss Benson of Boldron, married Dr. R. S. Richardson, a noted London surgeon, in the 1830s and 1840s and that this Miss Benson's mother was born a Newton, one of the Boldron family that included the Jonathan and Jeremiah who appear in this collection. The Bensons apparently lived at Boldron House, and these deeds show James Benson building up a small estate at the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Mrs. Vizard also knows of a relationship with the Coates family, members of which feature in these deeds.
