Records of the Darlington Queen's Nurses Association of the Queen's Institute of District Nursing
The Darlington Queen's Nurses Association (affiliated to the Queen's Institute of District Nurses) was founded in 1892. The Association operated both nursing services and training schemes in general district nursing and midwifery.
At the time of the introduction of the National Health Service the Association needed to clarify the rules. This was a problem as the early minute books and rules had been lost and there was no written record of the rules and objects of the Association. After consultations, amended rules were adopted on 1 July 1948.
On 5 July 1948 the Health Committee of Darlington Corporation became responsible for the Nursing Services and took over the midwifery but asked the Association to continue to be responsible for the general district nursing. As they were not dealing with midwifery cases, the midwifery training course was discontinued.
On 1 April 1959 the Health Committee took over the general district nursing service as well.
The Association was involved in discussions about its future role and the disposal of their property and funds. The Darlington District Hospital Management Committee bought the Association's Home at 68-70 Woodland Road Darlington.
The Association's right of disposal of funds was difficult to prove because of the lack of written evidence of their original objects and rules. However, the matter was finally settled by the Charity Commissioners' Scheme using the 1948 rules. The funds of the Association and the functions of the Committee were transferred as from the 23 May 1963 to the Darlington Queen's Nurses Aid in Sickness Fund
