Catalogue Description

SIR JOHN SUMMERSON

John Summerson (1904-1992), son of Samuel J. Summerson and Dorothea Newenham, was born in Darlington. His family owned the ironfounding business Messrs. Thomas Summerson and Sons which was later to become Summerson Holdings Ltd.

John Summerson was educated at Riber Castle School, Matlock, Harrow and University College, London, where he studied architecture. From 1926 he worked in various architect's offices and from 1929-30 he was an instructor in architecture at Edinburgh College of Art. Subsequently, he was to hold various lectureships and professorships in the history of architecture and fine art throughout England and U.S.A.

In 1945, Summerson became Curator of Sir John Soane's museum where he remained until 1984. He was to become a much respected author on the history of architecture and continued writing until an advanced age. From the 1940s onward, he was to sit on two Royal Commissions and was a member of various panels and committees relating to fine art, architecture and public records. He was awarded the C.B.E. in 1952, was knighted in 1958 and was made companion of honour in 1987.
