Catalogue Description

The Barningham Cow Club was established on 4 December 1849 with twenty one members from the townships of Barningham, Newsham, Scargill, Hope and Dalton, Brignall and Rokeby. According to the rules of the club, which were printed in 1877, the club was run by a committee of a president, treasurer and ten insured members elected from the contributing townships. The members were to receive compensation on the death of each insured cow, which was to be examined and valued before it was accepted for insurance. Each members was allowed to enter two cows only. From December 1877, an annual general meeting of the club was held.
