Durham Music Festival

Lack of co-ordinated planning was affecting the professional concerts organised by the various colleges of Durham University in the early 1960s. A student, William Tamblyn, (later Principal Lecturer in Music at Colchester Technical College), together with David Nield, founded the Colleges Music Festival which involved about six colleges. He subsequently became a member of the original Durham Music Festival Committee, convened by Alan Oyston in 1963 to make preparations for a Festival in 1964. Joint presidents were Professor Eric Taylor of Durham University Music School and Denis Weatherley a well-known local singer and headmaster. The first chairman was John Procter who was succeeded by Alan Oyston in November 1980.

The committee approached local authorities such as Durham City Council and Durham County Council to give financial guarantees and to appeal to others, such as I.C.I. (Middlesbrough), the National Union of Miners, Mackay Ltd., and Proctor and Gamble, for financial support for concerts given by professional musicians.

Annual festivals were organised in the autumn. There were various suggestions that the committee should co-ordinate with the Durham Colleges Concert Committee or with Musicon (a colleges-based modern music festival). Also, it was suggested that the festival take place in summer at the height of the tourist season. In 1984 it did take place in the spring.

As costs rose and the pattern of audiences changed, it was decided to change the Festival Society to a company known as the Durham Music Festival, limited by guarantee, and not have a share capital. This was established on 10 June 1982 at the Annual General Meeting.

On 14 January 1987 notice was given to wind up Durham Music Festival voluntarily while it was still solvent.
