William Ettricke (1701-1752) of High Barnes (Ref: D/X 1372/1)

William Ettricke (22 December 1701 - 17 June 1752) eldest son of Anthony Ettricke, was descended from the Ettricke family of Berford, parish of Wimbourn Minster, Dorsetshire. His grandfather, Walter Ettricke, came to the north of England as the collector of customs in the port of Sunderland in 1661 and purchased the High Barnes estate from the Haddock family in 1673.

William married Isabella, daughter of William Langley of Etwick, Norfolk, and had issue. He was a justice of the peace for County Durham.

Commonplace book and diary of William Ettricke of High Barnes, Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland, containing Greek and Latin exercises comparing the first five books of The Iliad of Homer with other authors, 1718, and diary, 25 March 1727 - 16 March 1749/50. The diary records Ettricke's travels, his health and medicinal cures, family and friends, improvements to his estate, weather observations and events of local and national interest, including horse races and shipwrecks.
