Records of Kate Louisa Churcher, student teacher (Ref: D/X 1414/1-4)

Kate Louisa Churcher was born at Landport, Hampshire, in July 1867. Later, the family moved to the north-east and Kate attended the Berwicke School, Rosehill, Wallsend, Northumberland. She became a pupil teacher there and, in 1888, won a Queen's Scholarship and attended Darlington Teacher Training College. In 1890, she became Headmistress of Victoria Girls' School, Cumberland. She remained headmistress of the school until her retirement in 1930. She spent her retirement at the home of a sister in Heaton, Newcastle, where she died in June 1942.
