Deeds to freehold and copyhold land in Escomb, 1725-1890

These deeds relate to three groups of property in Escomb which were acquired by Thomas Sibbald the elder, of Bishop Auckland, gardener to the Bishop of Durham at Auckland Castle, in the nineteenth century.

Two groups of property, the freehold piece of land called the Frontstead, on the west side of Escomb churchyard, and the copyhold land in the manor of Bondgate in Auckland, including two messuages and several closes of land, as described in D/X 994/1, derived from Thomas Brass of New Elvet in the City of Durham in the early eighteenth century.

The other piece of property, the copyhold Garth Close, derived from the estate of Robert Eden Duncombe Shafto in 1804.

Reference is made to greenhouses, vineries and cucumber houses on the freehold part of the property in 1848.
