Letters, journal and other records of Clement Collin and his family

Clement Thorpe Collin (1911-1982), known as Clem, worked at Durham County Mental Hospital (later Winterton Hospital) in administration until he joined the R.A.F. in November 1940. He began training as a navigator before becoming a bomb aimer in June 1942. He was posted to various camps in Britain and South Africa to complete his training. In late 1942, Clem's plane was disabled on a bombing mission, and his parachute failed to open and his reserve parachute almost did not open. He did not fly again and the rest of his crew crashed on take-off in 1943.

The correspondence is between Clem and his wife, Edith, members of his family and some friends. It concerns mainly his training and duties, entertainment, domestic issues, family news, weather and homesickness, with brief comments about the progress of the war. The correspondence ends in early 1943 on the birth of their daughter, Elizabeth, and Clem's admittance to hospital. The journal was written during the voyage from Britain to South Africa, in the summer of 1942. There are also miscellaneous mementoes from both Edith and Clem's war time experience.
