Catalogue Description
The Iron and Steel Trades Confederation (ISTC) was formed in 1917 from the British Steel Smelters, Mill, Iron and Kindred Trades Association (BSSMIKTA), the Associated Iron and Steel Workers of Great Britain (AISWGB) and the National Steel Workers Association Engineering and Labour League (NSWAELL). Any new members recruited by these unions then joined the British Iron, Steel and Kindred Trades Association (BISAKTA) and in this way, the restrictions of the 1917 Trade Union (Amalgamation) Act were circumvented. On 1 January 1984, BISAKTA assumed the name and functions of the ISTC.
On 1 July 2004, ISTC merged with the National Union of Knitwear, Footwear and Apparel Trades and became Community, the Union for Life.
National records of ISTC are held at the Modern Records Centre, University of Warwick (Ref: MSS.36).
