Easington Colliery (Ref: D/X 1543/ )

24-29

Easington Colliery
When high-speed man-riding trains were being planned for this colliery, H.M. Inspectorate of Mines insisted on the man-riding cars being braked to the rails, rather than the wheels, which was otherwise normal practice. This decision meant that for technical reasons, long-welded rail had to be laid over the whole length of the man-riding route (about six miles). This could not be assembled on the surface, because of the problem of getting it down the shaft, so the lengths were taken underground, laid out and then welded, under special arrangements approved by the Inspectorate. But junctions in this route were unavoidable, and these had to be specially designed, so that the brake shoes on the vehicles did not foul on the track. This design work was undertaken by the Easington Colliery Mechanical Engineer, Jack Foggon, and the photographs show this pointwork being assembled. The design became known generally as the 'Foggon Crossing'.
