James Phillips-Halpin was born in Monkwearmouth, c.1860. It is possible that he worked in the Yorkshire coalfields. He married Margaret Winifred Lennard at Ardsley, near Barnsley, Yorkshire. Margaret Winifred Lennard was born in Dublin and was deaf from birth. James Phillips Halpin returned to work in the Durham coalfield in the early years of the twentieth century and was Deputy at the Dean and Chapter Colliery, Ferryhill. It is believed that the large studio portraits of James and Margaret Winifred Phillips-Halpin were taken on the occasion of the wedding of their daughter, Florence, to James Pallister in 1910.
