Photograph of the Assize Judges' Coach crossing Elvet Bridge en route to the courts with a police escort, n.d. [c.1901 - 1903] Endorsed on back 'The procession of the Assize Judges from the apartments in Durham Castle to the Courts (designed by Ignatius Bonomi and opened in 1811) at the head of Old Elvet crossing Elvet Bridge c.1901 - 1903. The system of Crown Courts superseded the Assizes on 31st December, 1971. In the photograph the police preceding the coach Inspector Harnby, Sergeant Thompson, P.C.'s Scott, Anderson, Lay, Fowler, Roberts and Atkinson are accompanied by Trumpeter J. G. Pearson'
