Francis Mewburn set up in practice as a solicitor in Darlington in 1809 and was responsible for seeing the Stockton and Darlington Railway Bill through Parliament. He became clerk to the Stockton and Darlington Railway Company and was responsible for a number of railway bills.
In 1846 he was appointed Chief Bailiff of Darlington and in 1850 became a member of the first Local Board of Health.. His diaries reflect his wide interest in local affairs, history, agriculture, weather and politics. Extracts from his diaries have been published as The Larchfield Diaries. There were originally eight diaries; the Record Office has a photocopy of volume 1 (see D/XD 55) and volumes 2, 4, 5 and 6.
