FAMILY AND PERSONAL PAPERS

In addition to appointments, personal accounts, sporting records, etc., this section includes the archives of those families who were the antecedents of the Londonderrys (i.e. Vane, Tempest and Wharton) and of these families own antecedents. Muniments of title are included where the property concerned was disposed of before 1819, the personal papers of individuals acquired through the purchase of their property and the material relating to persons for whom the Londonderrys acted as executors or trustees are listed here also.

It was through the Vane branch that the earliest deeds came into the possession of the Londonderrys and this lineage has been dealt with first. The connection with the Maddisons brought to the Vanes a few papers of Sir Lionel Maddison, Mayor of Newcastle in 1634 and prominent coal entrepreneur (D/Lo/F 50-51) but the chief interest of this part lies in the surviving papers of the Vanes of Long Newton, cadets of the more famous Raby branch. The attention paid to his brother, Sir Henry, the regicide, has helped to obscure the activities of Sir George Vane (d. 1679). The papers listed here illustrate his part in enclosure in the 1650s resulting in disputes with the rector and freeholders of Long Newton (D/Lo/F 190-93) and his enterprises in the coal trade (D/Lo/F 110f). There are only two items in this collection belonging to Sir Henry Vane the elder (D/Lo/F 197-98) and none relating to Sir Henry Vane the younger.

The Tempest inheritance brought to the Londonderry archives a series of deeds dating from the 16th century onwards which are listed for the most part under the appropriate heading in D/Lo/D. Those listed below are deeds relating to scattered properties never forming part of the Londonderry estates and also settlements and personal deeds of the families from whom the Tempests either bought or inherited property. The two most important groups here are firstly the deeds of the Claxtons of Wynyard and their predecessors (D/Lo/F 322-335) which include a 15th century agreement for extensions to the Hall at Wynyard (322) and secondly the papers of Sir John Duck, Mayor of Durham in 1680. Duck's remarkable story is well known in the Durham area and is recounted in Surtees (History of Durham volume IV (2) pages 53-54). The documents here provide a little additional information about his career but are notable chiefly in that they include the papers of Ralph Clarke, coal fitter, of Sunderland, who was compelled to mortgage his property to Duck (D/Lo/F 387, 390-393). Business papers of this date (1656-87) particularly those relating to shipping, are sufficiently rare to make this a valuable archive group (for additional material see D/Lo/D 328-332).

The papers of the Vane-Stewart family are more miscellaneous as the bulk of their material is listed under the Business, Estate and Correspondence sections. However, attention may be drawn to the following items: material concerning the works of art purchased from a French dealer, 1842 - 1861 (D/Lo/F 475); the foreign travel journals of Lord Adolphus Vane and very fine hand-painted Indian views (D/Lo/F 490, 496); the sporting and social diaries of Henry John Vane-Tempest, 1877 - 1900 (D/Lo/F 511-516); the very full series of newspaper cuttings, 1886 - 1915 (D/Lo/F 543-572); an account of the shelling of Hartlepool by German warships in 1914 (D/Lo/F 609); and papers relating to the opening of the first Northern Ireland parliament, 1921 (D/Lo/F 593).

Two groups of records which are not directly related to any individual member of the family, are the correspondence and other papers concerning the administration of Houghton-le-Spring Grammar School (D/Lo/F 633-642) and the records of the Wynyard Park Racing Stud (D/Lo/F 643-654). The Londonderrys as heirs of Heath, founder of the School in 1574, shared in the appointment of the Governors and were often consulted on the appointment of the masters as well. The letters here give considerable information of value to the historian interested in early nineteenth century education. The Racing Stud was celebrated in sporting circles and produced the winners of several important races. The records include pedigrees and photographs of many famous racehorses.

This section concludes with the papers accumulated by the Londonderrys as executors for persons outside the family and by their own executors. The latter group contains material which should be used in conjunction with the Estate section.

John Tempest (d. 1738) married in 1706 Jane, only daughter and heir of Richard Wharton of Durham, thereby further increasing the family estates. The Langtons, lords of Wynyard and Redmarshall from at least the early 14th century, were represented in 1436 by a single female survivor, Sibyl, who married Sir Roger Conyers of Hornby (Yorkshire). Their grand-daughter Sibyl was also left as sole heir in 1507 and she married Ralph Claxton son of the Constable of Brancepeth Castle. The subsequent descent is outlined above (D/Lo/D 424-472). The deeds catalogued here are those inherited by the Tempests through their purchase of Wynyard, the title deeds to which are listed in the aforementioned section.

Duck of Durham (Ref: D/Lo/F381-393)

Sir John Duck was apprenticed as a boy to John Heslop, butcher of Durham, whose daughter, Anne, he married in 1655. After some rather legendary, Whittington-like adventures he became Mayor of Durham in 1680. He invested heavily in land and collieries and was lessee of the Rainton mines. Probably through this connection or through the purchase of his houses in Durham and Sunderland (see D/Lo/D 61-93, 320-357) a few of his papers came to the Tempests. There was also, however, a connection with the Whartons through the Heslop family (for Duck's career see Surtees IV, part 2, pp. 53-54)
