Catalogue Description

Accepted by HM Government in Lieu of Inheritance Tax and allocated to Durham County Record Office, 2016

LEGAL PAPERS

These fall into three groups: case papers, lawyers' papers and document schedules. The case papers listed here are those which were found collected together for legal purposes; where any item has been preserved as part of the estate or business papers etc., it has been listed in the appropriate section. Two of these cases are of more than local interest; the action against the 'Durham Chronicle' for libel against Lord Castlereagh (D/Lo/L 17) and the proceedings against the 'radical tailor' of Seaham (D/Lo/L 27). Lawyers bills are attracting more interest from legal historians and there is a good series covering the period 1819 to 1865 (D/Lo/L 40-55).

The schedules have been dealt with under this section as a series on their own, partly on account of their number and partly because they are no longer of much value as a means of reference, on account of the resorting and renumbering which has been necessary in the production of this catalogue. In the case of the Public Record Office schedules the new numbers have been added and also notes to indicate items which have disappeared since the schedules were drawn up.
