Catalogue Contents
The County Durham Insurance Committee was created by Durham County Council on 1 May 1912 to administer the National Insurance Act 1911. This Act allowed for compulsory health insurance for lower paid workers, although not their families.
Ref: H/CDPCT/1/1/1Durham County Executive Council was created in July 1947 under the Fifth Schedule to the National Health Service Act, 1946. It was intended to 'establish an efficient administration for the provision of general Medical and Dental Services and Pharmaceutical and Supplementary Opthalmic Services', and as such there was some overlap with the Insurance Committees until the NHS began on 5 July 1948.
