Hetton Downs Amicable Industrial Society and National Coal Board (Ref: D/X 1788)Hetton Downs Amicable Industrial Society (Ref: D/X 17881-2)

The Hetton Downs Co-operative was established in 1863 at Easington Lane, initially known as the Easington Lane Amicable Society. In 1874 a new Easington Lane Society was established and the original society then adopted the Hetton Downs name. Initially a single shop was open once a fortnight. Gradually more shops opened although only one, in Houghton, was referred to as a branch. The business also carried out some house building. In 1967 the management of the society was transferred to the Co-operative Wholesale Society and in 1970 the whole business was transferred to the North Eastern Co-operative Society.
