Catalogue Description
Marie Anna Kinzel was born in Sudetenland (parts of Czechoslovakia and Silesia annexed by Nazi Germany in 1938).She escaped from Germany with her husband, Walter Kinzel, during the Second World War to England and lived at 13 St Cuthbert's Terrace in Benfieldside.
She was the sister-in-law of Wenzel Jaksch, who was a leader of Sudeten Social Democratic Party in the 1960s and a major anti-Nazi activist. She assisted with his escape from Germany during the war.
She taught at Middle Street Secondary School in Newcastle and Walter taught at Consett Grammar School from 1 September 1941 to 1955. He also drew the drafts for the lace patterns.
She designed lace under the name Marianne. 'Marianne' had a pattern exhibited at the Festival of Britain.
