Catalogue Description

Bernard John Merlin Walsh was born on 5 August 1863 and died 30 September 1928.
From his aunt he inherited shares in Pelton Colliery, amounting to an interest of a third. She was born Gertrude Lawrence Knight and was married first to Edward John Coleman of Stoke Park, Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire, then to Baron Robert Connemara. She died on 23 November 1898.
See D/X 903 for records relating to Gertrude Lawrence Knight, including records relating to her shares in Pelton Colliery, her will and her nephew inheriting said shares.
He was also a director of John Bowes and Partners Ltd. and Chairman of the Board of Gas Coal Companies Ltd., later Meiros Collieries Ltd.
Several documents in this collection refer to Walsh as a captain. He is listed in the 1904 Army List (See D/DLI 14/1/2/1), serving as a captain in 3rd Battalion Oxfordshire Light Infantry, promoted to that rank on 27 July 1898.
