Letter from John Shields to an unknown person concerning a 'Romanist' [Catholic] family named Swinburne living near St. Nicholas' Church, Durham, with a son at Elvet Bridge who seems respectable, decent and likely suitable for the unspecified work required by the letter's recipient, little is known of family although they have been in Durham a long time, mentions the archdeacon will be visiting to discuss forming of a branch of Church Association in Durham Diocese, which Shields is keen to see happen, 26 December n.d. [late 19th century] [John Shields (1816-1891) was active in civil and church life in in Durham City. He was a Justice of the Peace and was also actively involved in the Sunday School at St Nicholas, the Henry Smith Charity and Sherburn Hospital. More details are in his obituary in the Durham Directory (DCRO Ref: J 80)]
