Catalogue Description

Ramsey W. Rutherford was born in Consett in 1934, attended various local schools then studied at King's College, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, becoming editor of the King's Courier.

He went on to teach at West Hartlepool and Wallsend, then studied for a graduate teaching qualification with Leicester University, after which he returned to the North East to teach history and English at Consett Grammar School for five years.

For the following two years, he worked as a sub-editor for The Journal, before studying for a M.Litt at Edinburgh University while working as a sub-editor for the Scottish Daily Mail.

He went on to teach languages in Leeds, then at York University, for which he was appointed a Fellow in Linguistics to the Nuffield Project, recognising him as a distinguished scholar.

In 1973, he went to Germany to teach English language and culture, returning to the North East on his retirement in November 1999 to share a house with his sister in Lanchester. This retirement is recorded in his diary (DCRO Ref: D/X 2074/1/1) and was cut short by his death in January 2001.
