Catalogue Description

There had been mining at Andrews House Colliery, Tanfield since at least 1726, but the colliery was taken over in 1738 by Sir James Clavering and worked more extensively.

The colliery was closed from the late 1770s until 1839, when a new shaft was sunk by the Northern Coal Mining Company.

Similar documents to this are held at Woodhorn Archives, Ashington, Northumberland. Sunniside Local History Society have researched the mine in detail.
