Catalogue Description

Bernard Bruce Freshwater (1909-1978) was born in Rhodesia to missionary parents. He worked as a General Practitioner (GP) in Darlington from 1939 to 1949.

Following the establishment of the National Health Service, he was forced to choose between general practice and surgery and chose the latter, working as a consultant surgeon at Darlington Memorial Hospital from 1949 until his retirement in 1975.

He also saw private patients and these records relate to his private practice.

As well as working at Darlington, he had regular operating sessions at Bishop Auckland Hospital and the St John of God Hospital in Scorton, North Yorkshire.

He died in Middlesbrough General Hospital in 1978.
