Winlaton St. Paul was created in 1832 from Ryton Holy Cross.

Parts of this parish became part of these parishes: Chopwell St. John the Evangelist, High Spen St. Patrick, Rowlands Gill St. Barnabas, Swalwell Holy Trinity.
